Embracing a New Process

Transitioning into this new style began with a leap into mixed media, blending inks, acrylics, and oils. The journey starts with inks, using an abundance of water to create fluid, unpredictable backgrounds. This technique often feels like a dance with uncertainty—where will the ink flow? How will it merge and settle? This element of unpredictability has become a crucial part of my process, allowing the natural movement of ink to dictate the initial forms and shapes.

Layers of Meaning

From here, I incorporate rollers and collage work, embedding hidden words and messages into the background. These layers add depth and intrigue, inviting viewers to look closer and discover the secrets within each piece. This stage is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about storytelling and creating a dialogue between the painting and its audience.

The Shift to Acrylic and Oil

Once the foundational layers are set, I sketch the basic forms of my subject, typically whimsical animal portraits. Using acrylics as a base allows for quicker drying times, essential for meeting the demands of my busy exhibition schedule. Despite my love for the ease and richness of oil paints, practicality necessitates this initial use of acrylics. After establishing the key elements—highlights, shadows, colors, and shapes—I return to oils for the finishing touches. This final phase is where my work truly comes to life, with the soft blending and vibrant hues that only oils can provide.

What I’ve discovered in these past six months is the importance of a structured process. This methodical approach has given me the confidence to experiment and innovate without the fear of ruining a piece.
