The Inspiration
The idea for "Bark'd Up the Wrong Fence" came from a desire to showcase the unique and often humorous personalities of animals, moving beyond the typical front-facing portraits. I wanted to capture a moment that tells a story and evokes a smile, highlighting the playful and determined nature of our furry friends.
Story:
Imagine a curious and adventurous Newfoundland dog who spots a barbecue party happening in the neighbours yard. His nose picks up the irresistible scent of grilling sausages, and he decides that he absolutely must join the fun. With boundless enthusiasm, he tries to squeeze through a gap in the blue fence. However, as he quickly realises, the gap is much too small for his sizeable frame. This moment of realisation, filled with both eagerness and comic disappointment, is what inspired the painting.
I wanted to create a piece that not only depicts a charming and relatable scenario but also brings a sense of nostalgia and joy to the viewer. We’ve all had those moments where our ambitions outpace reality, and this painting is a whimsical nod to those experiences. Through this artwork, I aim to remind people of the delightful unpredictability and spirited nature of animals, capturing a slice of life that resonates with both humour and heart.
